In classic Dragon Quest tradition, keeping track of experience requires regularly visiting someone (an old crone in this case) who keeps track of your kills. Beet the Vandel Buster (which happens to be by the same writer-artist team behind Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai) features experience levels printed on the characters' chest and money for killing monsters.Ironically, the manga's popularity would lead to non-spell Special Attacks being backported into the games, to the point where Dai's self-invented Finishing Move "Giga Strash" (initially a combination of a lightning spell, two genetic abilities, four sword techniques and an Amplifier Artifact) became simply an ability the Hero class gained at high levels. Abilities achieved through training alone, like Supernatural Martial Arts, Ki Manipulation and Ability Mixing, can have an enormous impact on combat strength yet have no statistical representation at all. Spell knowledge can only be detected because spells are unlocked through a Magically-Binding Contract. ![]() Hadlar's version of the basic Sizz/Mera spell is Hellfire which clings to its victim, Flazzard can produce multiple blasts at the same time, and initially Dai's hang in midair forcing him to punch them towards the target.
